17h00     Pilgrimage to historical and cultural sources of wines from Lebanon

A discussion of the origins and history of the powerful, elegant wines from Lebanon will accompany a tasting session of wines from several wineries and a number of terroirs. Lebanon, a small country often referred to as the Switzerland of the Middle East, sits on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean and is considered one of the cradles of winemaking.

The world of the Phoenicians, who developed vines and olive trees, then carried these treasures to the edges of their Mediterranean world and beyond, is Lebanon’s heritage. Winemaking in Lebanon today is the fruit of more than 5,000 years of experience and wisdom. The presence of a strong Christian minority that has been here since biblical times undoubtedly explains how this heritage has been maintained, without interruption, until today.

Jesuit priests in 1857 introduced new French wine grape methods, putting down the roots of what became Lebanon’s modern wine production. Lebanese wines today are made from Europe’s finest grape varieties, warmed by the country’s exceptional sunlight and terroirs. Production may be small, but the quality and variety are very good. Most vineyards are family-owned.

Presenter: Antoine Hobeika, who imports a number of Lebanese wines
